Anxiety. Everyone experiences anxiety to some extent. A little anxiety about an exam may push you to study harder, and worrying about a car crash means you’ll never forget your seat belt. However, there is a point where anxiety becomes consuming and debilitating to the person affected. Too much anxiety about an exam may cause you to forget everything you studied, and worrying too much about a car crash may keep you from getting in a car. Anxiety disorders are the most prevalent mental illness in the U.S. and they manifest in different ways.

Symptoms of Anxiety. Whether it’s worrying about someone’s perception of you, how an interview will go, or something bad happening to you or your loved ones, anxiety is often the fear of something that hasn’t happened yet. Rapid heart rate, irritability, headaches, insomnia, stomach aches, and an inability to focus are common signs and symptoms of anxiety disorders. When these symptoms become uncontrollable and interfere with your daily functioning, it is important to seek help.

Why get treatment for Anxiety? Anxiety disorders are treatable, and there are consequences that can come with avoiding treatment such as impaired cognitive functioning, weakened social experiences, disrupted relationships, and a greater risk for depression and/or substance abuse. It is imperative to acknowledge when you’re feeling anxious in order to find an effective coping strategy.

Treatment for Anxiety. Successful treatment of anxiety disorders includes therapy, medication, and/or other approaches like meditation, relaxation, and mindfulness practices. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a common treatment that focuses on how thoughts and feelings influence behavior. CBT teaches patients how to manage negative thoughts and make behavioral changes to relieve anxiety. While we can’t control everything that happens in our lives, we can control how we understand and respond to different situations.
