ABOUT DR. SAM B. SMITH
Dr. Samuel B. Smith is a licensed clinical psychologist in the state of California and has over 30 years of clinical experience working in the mental health field with children, teens and adults in many different settings. He holds a PhD degree in Clinical Psychology from the APA accredited, The Wright Institute located in Berkeley, CA.
Dr. Smith completed his undergraduate education with a B.A. in Psychology and minors in Biology and Religion. His practicum experiences include individual therapy to University of California, Berkeley students and adults, and psychological assessment/testing training from University of California, San Francisco Hospital.
He completed his APA approved pre-doctoral internship at a non-profit community based mental health clinic in San Francisco that provided services to culturally diverse populations of children, adolescents and adults. After his pre-doctoral internship, he worked as a Registered Psychologist in San Francisco, including children on the Autistic Spectrum and as well as with kids at an inner-city high school. Dr. Smith’s doctoral dissertation was on adoptees search for birth origins and its correlation to shame and guilt. This has led Dr. Smith’s interest to the field of adoption and working with adoptees and adoptive parents and families.
Once licensed as a clinical psychologist, Dr. Smith worked for the State of California in various adult institutions and programs. He also provided private practice mental health services to individual and groups of youth parolees in Oakland, CA. He has been a clinical director/senior supervisor to case management, enhanced outpatient and in-patient crisis bed programs.
Dr. Smith also worked as Supervisory Faculty at Alliant University teaching, providing clinical supervision and as an Advisor/Liaison to internship/practicum training sites throughout the Bay Area.
Dr. Smith has experience providing treatment for all types of difficulties that include trauma, depression, anxiety, bipolar, schizophrenia, personality disorders, parenting problems, adolescent issues, psychological assessment.
Dr. Smith works from a psychodynamic/psychotheraputic orientation including behavioral interventions through CBT and Rational Emotive Therapies.
